10:45 AM-12:45 PM Baltimore Convention Center 330, Symposium - Group/Division Sponsored
Population Genetics in Oral Health Research

Sponsored by: NIDCR
Description: The field of genetic epidemiology focuses on the role of genetics and the environment in health and disease. The study of genetic variation at the molecular level is crucial for the understanding of the etiology and pathogenesis of numerous diseases and recent advances in molecular biology have resulted in dramatic new capabilities in the expanding field of population genetics. This symposium will highlight the importance of genetics in oral health research in presentations that will: 1) review basic terminology and concepts used in genetic epidemiology for the study of complex diseases, 2) highlight statistical concepts such as linkage, association and segregation analyses using examples of studies involving genetic epidemiology and, 3) address challenges and approaches for the integration of molecular genetic information into strategies for promoting oral health and preventing dental and craniofacial diseases
