New Frontier of Craniofacial Tissue Research: From Development to Regeneration

Sponsored by: Craniofacial Biology
Description: For the last decades, significant progress has been made in defining the mechanism governing the development of craniofacial tissues such as teeth, mandible, maxilla, tongue and masticatory muscles. Recently, great advance also has been made in regenerating tissues by using stem cells. The mechanism for governing the development seems to be closely related to that for regulating the regeneration. For instance, a sophisticated network, which consists of a number of transcription factors such as myoD, Pax, Msx, and various kinds of peptide growth factors such as IGF, TGF-beta, FGF, functions in the process of skeletal muscle development. The regeneration of skeletal muscle by satellite cells seems to be governed by the similar mechanism to the development of skeletal muscle. Thus, researches on the development of the skeletal muscle are able to provide the regeneration of the skeletal muscle with essential and significant information. The primary goal of this symposium is to summarize the current knowledge of craniofacial development, and to seek the possibility and perspective of craniofacial regeneration. This primary goal will be achieved in the following presentations. 1) TGF-beta signaling and craniofacial morphogenesis. 2) Heat shock protein (Hsp25) regulates acinar cell differentiation and regeneration in submandibular gland. 3) Regulation for the development, regeneration and adaptation of tongue and masticatory muscles by growth factors. 4) Molecular mechanisms of dental hard tissue regeneration
