The Osteoporosis - Oral Health Connection: Fact or Fiction?

Sponsored by: Diagnostic Systems, Nutrition, Periodontal Research
Description: Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass and micro-architectural deterioration of the bone scaffold that results in increased bone fragility and susceptibility to fracture. It is one of the most common disorders of older adults and is estimated to affect 75 million people in Europe, Japan and the United States. The NHANES III study estimates that 50-68% of U.S. women over 50 have either osteoporosis or osteopenia (low bone mass, and a risk factor for osteoporosis). Chronic periodontitis is also common and the NHANES III study estimates that 35% of adults in the United States have this disease, raising the possibility of an association between the two. Osteoporosis is often not detected until a fracture occurs. Methods of early detection, such as screening for risk factors, are increasingly part of health care practice. Reflecting increased public and governmental interest in osteoporosis and women's issues in general, there has been an increase over the last decade in research addressing the relationship between osteoporosis, tooth loss, and alveolar bone loss. The symposium will be a forum to discuss new and emerging research in this area, strategies for incorporation of screening into dental practice, and opportunities for future collaborative research. The three speakers will explore the osteoporosis – oral health connection in the domains of diet and nutrition, periodontal disease, and radiological screening. Following the three 30-minute presentations there will be a 30-minute panel discussion with audience participation
