Application of Informatics in Oral Health Research: Results of a Conference

Sponsored by: NIDCR
Description: The discipline of biomedical informatics increasingly is being recognized as an essential tool for discovering novel ways of preventing, diagnosing, and managing oral and craniofacial diseases/conditions. Dental informatics, a sub-discipline of biomedical informatics, is an evolving discipline that applies computer technology and automated information systems to the cognitive, information processing, and communication components of oral health research, practice, education, and management. Dental informatics is both a basic and an applied science, i.e., a continuum spanning model formulation, system development, installation, implementation, and evaluation. In June 2003, the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research and the National Library of Medicine sponsored a conference held on the campus of the National Institutes of Health entitled “Dental Informatics and Dental Research: Making the Connection.” Conference participants discussed strategies to address how biomedical informatics can contribute most productively to the resolution of oral health, research-related problems. This symposium will provide a forum for presentation of results from this conference; the overall objective is to inform attendees about the use of biomedical informatics in dental, oral, and craniofacial research and provide an overview of opportunities for the use of informatics in improving oral health and well-being. Four presenters discuss opportunities and challenges regarding the application of biomedical informatics in oral health research. The symposium is directed toward all levels of researchers, from the new to the experienced investigator, interested in learning about the growing discipline of informatics and its relevance and value to oral health research and education, and application to dental practice. The symposium includes an overview of the challenges and opportunities regarding the application of informatics in oral health research; bioinformatics training and curriculum for dental researchers; the application of Informatics in oral and craniofacial development; and the role of informatics research in improving clinical dental practice
