Cytokine and Signal Transduction Blockers for the Treatment of Inflammatory Periodontal Diseases

Sponsored by: Periodontal Research, Pharmacology, Therapeutics, & Toxicology
Description: Research over the past two decades has recognized the critical importance of host modulation in controlling inflammatory periodontal diseases. Advances in drug discovery have identified potent modulators of signal transduction pathways initiated by pathogenic infection that can be targeted by a variety of novel designer therapeutics. This symposium will highlight the current anti-cytokine strategies being employed as anti-inflammatory agents and their prospects as new therapeutics in the management of chronic and aggressive periodontitis. As potent modulators of the immune response, the interleukins are potential targets in periodontitis treatment. New targets for anti-inflammatory cytokines include TNF-α and the newly marketed anti-TNF agent called sTNFR:Fc (p75), or etanercept, has been used to manage rheumatoid arthritis. Other similar agents aimed at pro-inflammatory cytokines through cytokine traps will be discussed called IL-1 Trap. In addition, intracellular signal transduction inhibitors that limit cytokine production will be discussed with particular relevance to blocking bone resorption inhibitors. Particular emphasis on novel strategies in early clinical trials used to inhibit NFκB and p38 MAP kinase signaling pathways will be highlighted from speakers. This symposium is aimed at basic, translational and clinical investigators who wish to gain information on the state-of-the art in the management of inflammatory disorders in other medical diseases with ramifications in the treatment of chronic bone loss in periodontitis
