3208 HBV vaccination among dentists from Belo Horizonte/Brazil: determining factors
C.S. OLIVEIRA, V.L.S. RESENDE, and I.A. PORDEUS, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Brazil

Objectives: to assess the prevalence of HBV vaccination and seroconversion among dentists from Belo Horizonte/Brazil and to analyze the influence of some independent variables: gender, years of graduation, the correct use of protective barriers and attendance to continuing education. Methods: after informed consent, a pre-tested questionnaire was personally distributed to a representative sample of 333 dentists. A response rate of 65% was obtained, totaling 218 participants (100 females and 118 males). Chi-squared and Fisher Exact Tests were applied to the data (p-value 0.05). Results: Most dentists (170/77%) reported having completed the full vaccination scheme against HBV (3 doses), but only 22% of these (37) mentioned having submitted to seroconversion tests. Being vaccinated was most frequently reported by dentists who graduated in the last 15 years (p-value 0.04) and by those who frequently pursued continuing education (p-value 0.001). It was not observed statistically differences for gender (p-value 0.17) and for the correct use of protective barriers (p-value 0.19). Conclusions: Even though HBV vaccines are freely available, efforts should be made in order to wider the vaccination coverage amongst dentists. Furthermore, emphasis should also be given to seroconversion testing. Financial support: FAPEMIG, CNPq.
