A.R. PORTER-WILLIAMS, J.O. BURGESS, and D. MERCANTE, Louisiana State University, New Orleans, USA Objectives: To evaluate the effects of six different finishing kits on surface roughness and gloss of seven different materials representing direct composite resins and indirect composite resin and ceramic blocks. Methods: The finishing kits studied were:(1)Brassler Disks-BD,(2) Poli-Pro- PP,(3) Sof-Lex- SL,(4) Kenda- KD,(5) Jiffy- JF,and(6) Dialite- DL. The materials studied were in disc shape made from five direct resins (Filtek Supreme,Z-250,A110, Z100, Vitalessence, laboratory processed composite resin block (Paradygm-P) and a ceramic block (Vita Mark II-V). Surface roughness (Ra microns) and gloss (1-100 GU) were measured by using a profilometer (Talyscan 150 [Taylor Hobson Precision]) and gloss meter (Novo-Curve [Rhopoint Instrumentation Ltd]. P and V as received surface served as control. For direct composites, surface cured against mylar matrix for each material was used as the control. For each measurement(n=10) specimens of each material were used. Results: Two-way ANOVA including factors for materials and method was used to analyze data on Ra and gloss. Tukey's HSD post-hoc analyses were used to determine significant inter-group differences (&alpha=.05). There were significant differences between type of material and method (P< .001 for all comparisons). Conclusions: Excepting finishing with DL on P all finishing systems examined produced a surface smoothness which is beyond detection limit (<.5 microns) of the tongue [Jones CS,BDJ 196:42,2004]. For the direct composites, none of the finishing kits were capable of producing a gloss comparable to that of the control. With the exception of DL, all finishing kits improved gloss relative to the control; but KD on P resulted in gloss approaching that of mylar. Finishing with DL and KD resulted in far lower gloss values compared to its control (as received) and mylar control. | ||
