Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical efficacy and tolerability of tooth-whitening strip containing 2.9% hydrogen peroxide after 7 days of use. Methods: A matched, double-blind, one week clinical trial with 80 adult volunteers was conducted. Subjects were allocated to test or control group by color matching. The strip used for control group differed only in presence of 2.9% hydrogen peroxide. Subjects used strips twice daily for 2 hours for 7 days. Only the color of maxillary central incisiors were evaluated. Subjects were evaluated at baseline, 3, 4 and 7 days. Whitening efficacy was measured by individual color parameters (L*a*b*) using spectrophotometer, and the data were compared using analysis of covariance. Tolerability was assessed through interview and intraoral examination. Results: For between-group comparisons, the 2.9% hydrogen peroxide strips yielded an over 3-fold improvement in brigtness(¥ÄL*), nearly 2-fold reduction in yellowness (¥Äb*) compared to the control group after 7 days of use. ¥ÄE* of test group was 9.37 ±3.80 and control group was 3.91 ±1.62. There was a more than 2-fold change in overall color (¥ÄE*). Differences of all color parameters between two groups were statistically significant at the day 4 and day 7 evaluations (P < 0.001). With respect to tolerability, tooth sensitivity and oral irritation were the most common findings. Test group experienced more gingival irritation (48.6% vs. 16.6%) and dental hypersensitivity (51.3% vs. 26.6%) compared to control group. The severity of most side effects were tolerable and only one volunteer discontinued using because of hypersensitivity. Conclusions: There was significant color improvement for tooth-whitening strip containing 2.9% hydrogen peroxide. Severity of irritation and hypersensitivity was in tolerable level.
