H. STRASSLER, University of Maryland Dental School, Baltimore, USA Objective: this study evaluated clinical performance and durability of anterior etched porcelain veneers. At the last recall the study population was 30 patients. Methods: 167 veneers (Cerinate, Den-Mat) were placed on the enamel facial surfaces of maxillary and mandibular anteriors and premolars to change tooth appearance. Clinical steps: Evaluation/shade selection; Tooth preparation; Impressions; Veneer bonding- silane (CerinatePrime), enamel/dentin adhesive, composite resin (UltraBond, Den-Mat); Photocuring; Finishing procedures. Patients were recalled for evaluation and photographs 1-2 weeks postoperatively and regular intervals of 1 year for the first 3 years. The patients were recalled for collection of long term data at periods of 140 months- 235 months with a mean of 175.3 months ( 14.6 years). Modified U.S.P.H.S. criteria were used to evaluate color, cavosurface marginal adaptation and marginal discoloration. Results: the data at the last recall are as follows: Color: Alpha = 143;Bravo = 14;Charlie = 0;Delta = 0. Marginal adaptation: Alpha = 128;Bravo = 12;Charlie = 3; Delta = 14. Marginal discoloration:Alpha = 133;Bravo = 22; Charlie = 2; Delta = 0. There was 100% retention of the veneers over the period of this study. Over the duration of this study of the patients that were able to be recalled, 94% of the restorations were clinically successful (157 of 167) with only 10 veneers needing replacement. Replacement was usually due to chipping or cracking on stress bearing surfaces. In some cases the veneers were replaced not due to the severity of the fracture but because the protocol called for the veneers to be replaced if any fracture occurred. These 10 veneers are excluded from the data after replacement. Conclusion: results indicate that the porcelain veneer system tested Cerinate cemented with UltraBond was highly successful over the period of this study. | ||
