Objective: To determine the continued whitening effect of using a whitening toothpaste after at home bleaching.

Methods: Group one (n=16) completed a 2 hour non-peroxide whitening kit application and group two (n=16) completed a 2 hour peroxide whitening kit application (Rembrandt). Subjects were given Rembrandt Plus toothpaste to brush with twice daily. Tooth shade and stain were measured on the facial surfaces of the upper anterior teeth. Tooth shade was measured at baseline, one hour following whitening, and 1 and 3 months. Stain was measured at one hour post application and 3 months.

Results: Tooth shade improved almost five shades from baseline to post application. Three-month evaluation showed that tooth shade decreased by approximately two shades in both groups as compared to the post application evaluation. The only statistically significant change was the improvement in the shade of group 2 teeth (p< 0.05, t-test) from baseline to one month. It is also noteworthy that the tooth shade in both groups at 3 months was still below the shade before bleaching by over 2 shades showing that use of the whitening dentifrice helped maintain whitening after bleaching. The stain index of both groups increased slightly from the post application to the 3-month evaluations but not statistically significant (p>0.05, t-test). There were no statistically significant differences between groups.

Conclusion: Rembrandt Plus toothpaste maintained whiteness in those who used the 2 Hour White kit at a level lighter than that present prior to bleaching by almost two and one half shades for up to 3 months after tooth bleaching.
