MYERS1, 1Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, USA, 2Medical College of Georgia, School of Dentistry, Augusta, USA Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate over 1 year the clinical performance of Class I and II resin restorations placed using a self-etching or a total-etch self-priming adhesive. Methods: Four volunteer community dentists placed 194 Z 250 (3M ESPE) restorations using Adper Prompt (3M)(AP; n=105; 89 Class II) and Single Bond(3M)(SB; n=89; 78 Class II). Participants received one or two pairs of restorations, except those needing three restorations received an unpaired restoration randomly assigned. Using modified Ryge criteria and a double-blind study design, restorations were assessed immediately after placement (baseline) and after one year for color stability, marginal stain, marginal integrity, surface texture, secondary caries, and proximal contact. Results: At baseline, 142 restorations received Alfa scores in all categories. Exceptions within the SB group were Bravo: 1 color, 2 marginal integrity, 8 surface and 12 proximal contact. For the AP group, exceptions were Bravo: 2 marginal integrity, 17 surface and 14 proximal contact. After one year 184 restorations (AP=95, SB=89) were evaluated, of which 79 received Alfa scores in every category. Exceptions within the SB group were Bravo: 6 color, 9 marginal discoloration, 13 marginal integrity, 6 surface and 10 proximal contact, and Charlie: 4 contact. For the AP group, exceptions were Bravo: 11 color, 15 marginal discoloration, 16 marginal integrity, 7 surface, 6 proximal contact, and Charlie: 2 proximal contact. The major deficiencies of restorations in this study were technical, especially the difficulty of establishing proximal contact. A Kruskal-Wallis one-way ANOVA on ranks showed no significant difference (p<0.05) in marginal discoloration, the only category pertaining to performance of the adhesives in which scores below Alfa were assigned. Conclusion: Both adhesives demonstrated clinically acceptable performance. This project was supported by 3M ESPE. | ||
