P. BOONSAENG, T. ROCHANASIRI, V. YIMCHAROEN, and J. KASETSUWAN, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare the toothbrushing efficiency between the blind and sighted students in a period of one month. Methods: This was the parallel group design study in forty-eight students, aged 9-12 years. They were equally divided into blind and sighted group. Subjects in each group were matched in pairs by ISODATA clustering with their plaque and gingival indices. All subjects were instructed to brush twice daily using horizontal scrub technique. Toothbrushing efficiency was assessed by Turesky Modification of Quigley-Hein plaque index (PI), and Danser gingival traumatic index (TI) before and after one month. Results: Mean PI score was significantly decreased from 3.20 + 0.34 to 2.28 + 0.23 in sighted group and from 3.38 + 0.46 to 2.40 + 0.24 in blind group (p< 0.001,Paired t-test) which were not significantly different between the two groups. Moreover, neither of subject has gingival abrasion at the end of this study. Conclusion: No significant difference in toothbrushing efficiency is found between blind and sighted students considering plaque index and gingival traumatic index. | ||
