S. KOH, C.D. JOHNSON, and S. TURNER, University of Texas - Houston / Health Science Ctr, USA

Objective: A two-week clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of professional home bleaching systems by comparing two different 14% Hydrogen Peroxide delivery systems. Methods: Twenty eight adults from 23-57 years old (Male-16, Female-12) participated in this study. Patients with shade A3 or darker with Vita shade guide were selected. Patients were randomly assigned to either the marketed 14% Hydrogen Peroxide Crest Whitestrips Supreme (control group) or experimental 14% Hydrogen Peroxide Premier Bravo 15 Rush Gel. The experimental group used the gel with a custom tray once a day for 15 minutes, and then rinsed for 20 seconds with the post bleach rinse. The control group used strips for 30 minutes twice a day. Pre-operative and post-operative photos were taken with the Vita shade guide. Patients were interviewed by primary investigator 24 hours after starting the treatment to check whether they were experiencing sensitivity. Both groups were treated for two weeks. Results:Both treatment were effective in whitening teeth. The average shade change with Premier Bravo 15 Rush Gel was minus 9.42 compared to minus 9.14 for the marketed control group. Chi square test indicated that there was no significant difference between the two systems on bleaching efficacy. Gingival irritation was the most common side effect reported by both groups. Two of the patients in the Premier Bravo 15 Rush Gel group (14%) reported sensitivity, but it was resolved after they adjusted the amount of gel. Six of the patients from the control group (42%) reported sensitivity. Conclusion: Both Crest Whitestrips Supreme and Premier Bravo 15 Rush Gel were effective in whitening treatment. Use of 14%Hyhrogen Peroxide Premier Bravo 15 Rush Gel with a custom tray for 14 days resulted in significantly less sensitivity and significantly less time for treatment than Crest Whitestrips Supreme.
