| Contemporary Approaches to Fears about Dental Pain: Theoretical Formulations and Clinical Applications | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
Sponsored by: Behavioral Sciences, Dental Anesthesiology Research, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Pharmacology, Therapeutics, & Toxicology, Prosthodontics Research | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Description: This workshop will provide an overview of the state of the art in both the conceptual formulation and the assessment of fear and anxiety associated with dental pain. In spite of technological, pharmacological, and clinical advances, fear of dental pain and other aspects of dentistry continue to discourage patients from seeking appropriate and timely oral health care. The cycle of fear avoidance pain is manifested worldwide, across industrialized and developing countries. Over the past decade, there has been significant experimental and clinical work on fear and anxiety associated with chronic and acute pain, including dental pain. The workshop focus will be on how current models of fear of dental pain fit with existing empirical knowledge. Assessment of fear of dental pain also will be covered to capture the ways in which it presently is understood. Finally, clinical implications will be discussed, to encourage the transfer of knowledge between scientific and clinical arenas. This workshop reviews contemporary international research on fear of pain in the areas of oral surgery, endodontics, and temporomandibular disorder, as well as in healthy control samples. The first presentation describes experimental research on the fear of pain construct, vis a vis whether the patient has a history of significant directly experienced pain. The second speaker covers research that utilized a brief psychoeducational videotape to ameliorate fears about pain prior to endodontic therapy, with implications for specialty and general practice. Using cluster analytic techniques, the third presentation proposes constellations of pain fearful and non fearful oral surgery and emergency patients. Finally, the discussant will overview the “worldwide cycle of fear and pain,” and will critique the contemporary lines of research, with recommendations for future advances | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
