Use and Validity of Oral Health Measures in Public Health and Epidemiology

Sponsored by: Behavioral Sciences, Oral Health Research
Description: Surveillance provides important information for development, implementation and evaluation of population-level efforts to prevent and control disease. Current measures for periodontal disease are extremely resource intensive and cannot be included in several surveillance systems at the state and local levels. Therefore, it has become necessary to consider other valid and reliable measures for population-based surveillance of periodontal disease. In addition self-reported measures will be useful for epidemiologic research. The primary objectives of this symposium are to: 1. Evaluate current evidence for the use of self-reported measures of periodontal disease in population-based surveillance and epidemiologic research, 2. Identify strengths and limitations of such self-reported measures of periodontal disease; and 3. Consider levels of accuracy necessary for assessing periodontal health in the population using the experiences of successful survey systems of chronic diseases. The symposium is supported by the Division of Oral Health of CDC
