Understanding the Fundamentals of Tooth-whitening Technology

Sponsored by: Oral Health Research
Description: Understanding the Fundamentals of Tooth whitening Technology. W. DeVizio, Colgate-Palmolive Company, Piscataway, NJ, USA The understanding of methodologies to measure whitening is critical to research in tooth whitening. Currently at least four methods are used. In order to make an informed judgment in protocol design and interpretation of study results researchers must understand the basis for each method and its particular strengths and weaknesses. A prerequisite to this understanding is a clear knowledge of the fundamentals of color science. This symposium will cover the basis for color measurement, current clinical methods used, the science of tooth whitening products and finally a clinical comparison of the methods with various available products. After this symposium each participant should understand the nature of the measurements used in tooth whitening research and should be able to design protocols and interpret results based on this learning. Additionally, it is hoped that the discussion will yield lively debate and enable the dental researcher to better understand the strengths and weaknesses of the methods currently used. The symposium is supported by Colgate-Palmolive
