8:00 AM-10:00 AM Hawaii Convention Center Ballroom, Symposium - Group/Division Sponsored
The Odontoblast–A Special Cell?

Sponsored by: Mineralized Tissue, Pulp Biology
Description: Odontoblasts contribute to many aspects of tooth structure and function. Their primary role is in dentinogenesis (primary, secondary and tertiary), but odontoblasts also have a close relationship with intradental nerves and may contribute to dentinal pain. Some nerves, in turn, may regulate odontoblast function. Often these diverse aspects are considered in different research arenas. The aim of this symposium is to explore how these features come together to define odontoblast form and function thereby providing a blueprint for the future development of exciting strategies for regeneration and tissue engineering of the dentine-pulp complex and exploitation of new technologies. The following topics will be addressed in the symposium : 1) Odontoblast genes and proteins (Mary MacDougall, University of Texas, USA); 2) Odontoblast morphology and secretory behaviour (Rex Holland, University of Michigan, USA); 3) The odontoblast as a sensory receptor/transducer (Bruce Matthews, University of Bristol, UK); 4) Odontoblast-neural relationships (Ivo Lambrichts (Limburgs University Centre, Belgium). It is anticipated that this symposium will be of interest to researchers in the fields of pulp biology and tooth structure, as well as to restorative dentists wishing to better appreciate odontoblast form and function
