Nutrition, Oral Health, and Food Choice: Are Their Influences the Same in All Countries?

Sponsored by: Geriatric Oral Research, Nutrition
Description: Numerous studies have found that edentulism, fewer remaining teeth, poorer masticatory function and other oral problems are associated with decreased nutrient intake. Subjects with a low number of opposing tooth pairs were more likely to avoid stringy foods such as meat, crunchy vegetables such as carrots and breads. Some studies reported that removable partial dentures did not correct these problems. The objectives of this symposium will be to: 1) Discuss the impact of poor masticatory function and dental restoration on nutrient intake, 2) Examine cultural differences between countries that may influence the impact of oral health on nutrition, and 3) Identify resources that can be accessed to supplement and expand international research activities addressing the interrelationship between nutrition and oral health. This symposium will have four speakers followed by a discussion session and is targeted to all levels of students and faculties
