Human Papilloma Viruses & Oral Cancer: State of the Science and Art

Sponsored by: Oral Medicine & Pathology
Description: Whilst an aetiological role for HPV’s in cancer of the uterine cervix is now well established, and screening for these viruses forms part of cervical cancer screening programmes in many countries, the relation of HPV’s to oral cancer is uncertain. The prevalence of high-risk HPV genotypes in oral squamous cell carcinomas ranges from zero to ~40% in reported studies. There are strong biological mechanisms whereby viral oncogenes can contribute to the carcinogenic process by inactivating p53 and RB gene products, but the extent to which these mechanisms are operative in oral lesions is unproven. Furthermore the molecular epidemiology of HPV carriage in oral tissues – both normal and diseased - around the world is ill understood. Four distinguished scientists who are making seminal contributions to their fields will address the Global Epidemiology of HPV’s and Oral Cancer; HPV Associations and Disease Mechanisms in Oral and Cervical Cancers in Asia; Animal and in vitro Studies on the Mechanisms of HPV Carcinogenesis; and Practical Applications Concerning HPV Carcinogenesis in Screeening and Prevention, including Progress with Vaccine Development. New research priorities will become evident
