12:30 PM-2:30 PM Hawaii Convention Center Ballroom, Symposium - Group/Division Sponsored
Human Genetics Advances for Periodontal Research and Treatment

Sponsored by: Diagnostic Systems, Microbiology / Immunology and Infection Control, Periodontal Research, Pharmacology, Therapeutics, & Toxicology, Genetics
Description: This symposium will present a current update on the state of advances in human genetics research and consider how these apply to periodontal research today and to the clinic of the future. First, we will review the capabilities and limitations of traditional human genetic epidemiology approaches of twin and family studies, as well as disease gene mapping by linkage analysis for simple, single gene disorders. Next, the audience will receive an update on the latest molecular tools that are greatly expanding the capabilities of scientists to evaluate very large numbers of genetic targets. We will then consider how these huge data sets create new challenges and opportunities for informatics and statistical analysis strategies such as the “hapmap” approach that is currently the focus of much attention for complex diseases. Last, we will consider how this new knowledge and these analysis capabilities may provide periodontal disease prevention and treatment in the future. The symposium is aimed at all members of the dental research audience who may have an interest in human genetics. Everyone from students to highly experienced researchers should be able to benefit from the presentations. The goals are to present a complete picture of where human genetics research is today and what we may expect in the future for periodontal research and clinical practice. The symposium will focus primarily on inherited variation, especially single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Other approaches such as gene expression microarrays and proteomics will also be included, though in less detail. The symposium is supported by Applied Biosystems
