| Description: This symposium will describe emerging trends and ongoing research aimed at understanding the mechanisms by which oral infections effect systemic health and by which the oral environment can be used to monitor systemic well-being. Research gaps, as well as communication and educational opportunities will be identified aimed at improving the public health. Speical note will be paid to collaborative activities that bridge scientific fields, health professions and the private sector. The symposium is aimed at a broad spectrum of investigatos ranging from basic biomedical scientists to clinical investigators. The topics to be covered include the relationships between periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease; glycemic control, diabetes, and obesity; pre-term birth and birth weight; and salivary diagnostics as illustrative models.
