Objectives: To investigate problems reported by patients before and after prosthetic treatment. Methods: Patient-reported problems have been studied using the German version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-G, 53 questions indicating problems) in a convenience sample of 107 prosthodontic patients (mean age ± sd, 56.3 ± 14.6; 56% women) before (T0), 1 month (T1), and 6-12 months after treatment (T2). To characterize the number of problems at T0, T1, and T2 medians and Interquartile Ranges (IQR) were computed. Changes in number of problems between T0 and T1 and between T1 and T2 were characterized by median and IQR of the differences. Results: Number of reported problems decreased from T0 (median: 19, IQR: 9-33 problems) to T1 (median: 9, IQR: 4-20 problems) and further to T2 (median: 5, IQR: 1-14 problems). The median of differences between T0 and T1 was 6, IQR: 1- 2 problems, and 2, IQR: 0-6 problems between T1 and T2, respectively. Most frequently found problems reported by patients as occurring "fairly often" or "very often" were at T0: Difficulty chewing (33%), Take longer to complete a meal (30%), Food catching (27%), Uncomfortable to eat (25%), and Dentures not fitting (25%). Most frequent problems at T2 were: Sore spots (4%), Painful gums (3%), Discomfort with dentures (2%), and Sore jaw (2%). Symptoms that once disappeared did not return later. Conclusion: Patients report a variety of problems before prosthetic therapy. The number of such problems decreases after treatment and 6-12 month afterwards substantially. Pre- and post treatment problems differ substantially. While mostly problems with chewing and old dentures dominate at baseline, the most frequent problems ˝ to 1 year after treatment are related to difficulties with the new dentures.
