3257 Water Sorption of Resin-based Materials

Objectives: The aim of this study is to obtain information of the degree of water these materials absorb and how this may affect the dimensions of a cement, as well the cement's ultimate tensile strength.

Methods: Cylinders (4mm diameter and 6mm long) of resin-based (PermaFlo DC(Ultradent), PANAVIA F(Kuraray), RelyX ARC(3M), LINKMAX(GC)), resin-modified glass ionomer cement(FujiCEM(GC)), and compomer (PermaCem(DMG)) luting agents were constructed. The light-cured and dual-cured materials were light cured for 60s at each end of the mould used to make the cylinders. The specimens were placed in either distilled water, or a solution of 50 Vol% ethanol and water and stored at 37oC. Measurements were made approximately after one hour, and at 1 hour, days 1, 2, 3 and 7 then weekly until the variations in dimension and water sorption stabilised. The tensile strengths of specimens were made at days 1, 3, 7, 14 then 1, 3 and 6 months after manufacture.

Results: The data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Fisher's PLSD test (p<0.05). Resin-based cements tended to show lower water sorption than of resin-modified GIC or compomer. Resin-based cements stored in the solution of 50 Vol% ethanol and water showed lower tensile strength at earlier stage than the ones stored in distilled water. Compomer resulted in stable, lower tensile strength.

Conclusion: Resin-based luting agents showed higher stability than resin-modified GIC or compomer luting agents.
