The need for advanced training opportunities had been highlighted in reports of visits by CMS teams to most of the clinics and centers that work with children with facial differences. Methods: In 2003 survey questionnaires were distributed to all members (approximately 285 people) of the 12 cleft palate clinic teams and the 4 craniofacial centers within the state. Results: A total of 143 questionnaires were completed and returned (50% return). Overall, most respondents (85%) had at least 2 years of experience with the team. Thirty respondents (21%) have attended training offered in the past, and all but one reported finding the training to be of benefit. One hundred respondents (70%) would like continuing education (non-degree) to be offered within their specialty. Twenty-three respondents (16%) would like continuing education (non-degree) within a sub-specialty. Forty-five respondents (31%) would like to attend a familiarization short course with another discipline. A total of 115 respondents (80%) believe they could benefit from courses such as “Genetics for Non-Geneticists” or “Speech Pathology for Non-Speech Specialists.” Strong interest was expressed in “Orthodontics for Non-Orthodontists,” especially regarding new techniques such as distraction and osteogenesis. Conclusions: It is apparent from this survey that members of Florida's craniofacial and cleft palate teams believe there is a significant need for training of team members within and across disciplines. | ||
