GERLACH2, 1University of Florida, Gainesville, USA, 2The Procter & Gamble Co, Mason, OH, USA Objective: A 2-week clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the clinical response following use of two at-home professional whitening systems. Methods: In this parallel, examiner-blind, single-center study, 69 healthy adult volunteers were randomized to Crest® Whitestrips® Supreme, a strip-based 14% hydrogen peroxide system, or Nite White® Excel 3, a 16% carbamide peroxide gel delivered in a custom tray. Both treatments were used head-to-head over a 9-day period, and then strip use continued for a total of 21 days. Only the maxillary arch was treated, treatment was unsupervised, and all subjects were evaluated at all visits for blinding. Efficacy was measured objectively as L*a*b* color change from digital images of the anterior dentition, and safety was assessed by interview and examination. Results: After 9 days, the estimated means and standard errors for Db* (yellowness) were –2.52 ± 0.164 for the strip group and –1.72 ± 0.164 for tray group. At the end of head-to-head usage, treatments differed significantly (p < 0.05) with respect to Db*, as well as DE* and the composite measure DW*. The 14% hydrogen peroxide strips exhibited incremental whitening during the Day 9 to Day 21 period for all color parameters. At the respective ends-of-treatment, the strip group exhibited a significant (p < 0.0001) 91% improvement in Db* relative to the tray group. Both treatments were generally well tolerated, with tooth sensitivity and oral irritation representing the most common adverse events. One subject in the strip group discontinued use early because of treatment-related discomfort. Conclusion: The 14% hydrogen peroxide strips resulted in significant whitening head-to-head and at the end-of-treatment compared to a 16% carbamide peroxide tray system. | ||
