Objectives:The chemo-mechanical method of gingival retraction is the widely used technique. However it is questionable whether this techniques are followed by changes of the condition of the marginal gingiva. We investigated the possible long-lasting effect of retraction cord application soaked in different medicaments.

Methods: For the fine detection of inflammation of marginal gingiva the amount of CF was measured by Periotron 6000 device in 10 healthy  subjects before the cord insertion (baseline period), and 1, 2 hours ,one day and 1 week after the cord removal (postcord period) We used Periopaper to collect the CF from the 21 tooth. The control tooth was the 11. The knitted cord (#00 Ultrapack) were presoaked in physiological saline (group 1) and in different concentration of epinephrine (0.1%: group2, 0.01%:group3, 0.001%: group4). The systemic blood pressure (SBP) was measured by digital blood pressure monitor (OMRON). Statistical analysis we used was Wilcoxon test.

Results:There wasn't any significant changes in CF production compare to the baseline values and the control tooth in all of the four groups in any measured-timepoint.

There were no changes in SBP.

Conclusion:Present study suggests that the retraction cord soaked in different concentrations of epinephrine may not cause any delayed effect on CF production of the gingival margin.
