Objectives: This investigation compared the retention and marginal leakage of provisional restorations cemented with Duraphat (Colgate Oral Pharmaceuticals, Inc.) alone and with Duraphat used as liner with 2 provisional cements at 7 and 35 days. Methods: Forty-eight extracted human molar teeth were divided into 6 groups (n = 8) and prepared for full veneer crowns (10° taper, 1 mm shoulder margin and 5 mm axial height) using diamond burs (8848-31-016, Brasseler). Polymethyl methacrylate (Alike, GC America) provisional crowns were fabricated and randomly cemented with: TempBond (TB) (Kerr), TempBond-NE (TBNE) (Kerr), Duraphat (DU), Duraphat and TempBond (DU/TB), Duraphat and TempBond-NE (DU/TBNE) or no Duraphat or cement (Control). Teeth were thermocycled (5°/60°, 500 cycles, 30 sec. dwell time) and stored at 37° C in 100% humidity. Twenty-four hours prior to testing all specimens were soaked in a 0.5% crystal violet solution (Poly Scientific). Maximum force required to remove crown was measured at 7 and 35 days on a Bionix200 (MTS Systems Corporation) using a crosshead speed of 5.0 mm/min. Marginal leakage was scored on an ordinal scale (1-4) and recorded following retention measurements. Results: Multifactoral ANOVA showed significant differences in retention between groups but not between days (P <0.05). Mean retention (± SD) (N) are presented in the table. A Kruskal-Wallis and Mann–Whitney U test for leakage (P <0.05) mirrored retention data. Conclusions: Duraphat alone produced the highest retention and the least marginal leakage at both 7 and 35 days. Duraphat may be used as liner under provisional cements or as luting agent in long-term provisionalization.
