Objectives: this study investigated the morphological characteristics of torus mandibularis, situated on the lingual aspect of the mandible above the mylohyoid line, in a sample of affected Vietnamese adults attending the Faculty of Odonto-Stomatology in Ho Chi Minh City (N = 208 ; 64 males ; 144 females, mean age 38 „b 13,5 years). Method: Torus were observed in 86 individuals (42 on the right, 44 on the left), on the lingual aspect of the mandible. Results: Bilateral mandibular torus occurred more frequently than unilateral torus. On the right side, torus were located in the anterior in 68,8% of cases, in the middle part (premolars area) in 76,2%, in the posterior part in 9,5%; On the left side, the results are similar : 75% are anterior, 77,3% in the middle and 6,8% are posterior. The evaluation and measurements on plaster models showed on the right side : 66,7% of the torus were voluminous, 2,4% were multilobulated, 40,5% were bilobulated and 57,1% unilobulated. 88,1% of the torus were round. The height, width and length of the torus averaged 1,8 mm s-d 1,20, 5,9 mm s--d 2,4, 11,7 mm s-d 4,9, respectively. On the left side, 68,2% were voluminous, 9,1% were multilobulated, 38,6% bilobulated, 52,3% unilobulated. 79,6% were round. The height, width and length were respectively : 1, 9 mm s-d 1,8, 6,0 mm s-d 2,1, 12 mm s-d 4,8. Conclusion: torus mandibularis in Vietnamese, when compared with that of other investigators about torus palatinus, occur with a lower frequency. They are relatively small in size, often located in the middle part of the lingual aspect of the mandible, unilobulated and rounded in shape. | ||
