Method: 45 subjects aged 18-70 who met the inclusion/exclusion criteria were randomly divided into 2 groups: active product (Dental Wand, Den-Mat Inc.), and placebo. In this double blind design subjects painted the material 6 times per day on their maxillary premolars and anterior teeth for 30 seconds per tooth. Clinical measurements were taken at baseline, 2 weeks, and 4 weeks. The following 8 parameters were evaluated: 1. oral soft tissue; 2. quantitative spectrophotometer (SpectroShade MHT) L*b* measurements of tooth 8 and 9; 3. modified gingival index (MGI); 4. Turesky plaque index (PI), 5. odor assessment of tongue scraping; 6. Lobene stain index; 7. sensitivity questionnaire; 8. patient response questionnaire (at 4-th week visit only). Significance was determined using t-test with a=0.05. Results: No adverse change was observed in oral and soft tissues. The active group subjects showed significant reduction in the b* value (yellowness) from baseline to Week 4 and versus the placebo group. There were no significant changes in the L* value within or between the groups. For both groups MGI, PI and malodor decreased from baseline to week 4.. There was no change in stain or sensitivity for either group. Patients felt comfortable during treatment, liked the taste of the product, believed it improved their breath and whitened their teeth. Conclusion: The results indicate that the active product increased patient's perception of whitenss by decreasing the yellowness, is safe to use, improves breath and has a pleasant taste. It maintains tissue health, does not cause sensitivity, and does not stain the teeth. (This research was supported by Den-Mat, Inc.) | ||
