Objective: To examine demographic distribution of subjects who participated in eight clinical tooth whitening trials. Methods: Demographic information for age, gender and ethnicity was collected from 642 subjects who participated in eight IRB-approved clinical tooth whitening trials. The data, both in numbers and percentages, were compiled into four age groups (<26, 26-35, 36-50 and >50 years old) according to the gender and ethnicity. Statistical analyses were performed to compare differences among the age, gender and ethnicity of the subjects using the normal approximation to binomial at the significance level of Alpha=0.05. Results: The overall average age of the subjects was 44.85. The ratio of female (65.89%) to male (34.11%) was 1.93 to 1. The overall race composition was 61.37%, 20.87%, 8.41%, 6.07%, 0.62% and 2.66% for Caucasians, Hispanics, Asians, African-Americans, Native-Americans, and Mixed/Others, respectively. Data analyses found no statistically significant differences between genders in the four age groups except for the oldest male participants (>50 years of age. p=0.0208). There were statistically significant differences among ethnic groups in their participation (p<0.005) except for that between Asians and African-Americans (p=0.1096). The age groups, in either gender, were significantly different in their participation rate except for the oldest males. Using the gender factor, overall proportion for female subjects had a significantly higher participation rate than male subjects in eight tooth whitening trials (p=0.0001). Conclusion: There is a significantly higher proportion of female subjects participating in tooth whitening trials, indicating a higher interest in females than males to have their teeth whitened.
