| Satellite Symposium: "Clinical Research: Calibration of Examiners for Studies of Periodontal Disease" | |||
| * Poster files available online | |||
| Description: Recently, an increased emphasis has been placed on clinical research in the United States. This symposium will formulate a foundation of calibration principles and processes with the purpose of improving the quality of clinical examinations. The inclusion of new clinical investigators to participate in clinical studies of periodontal diseases may require several sessions to ensure that each examiner is appropriately calibrated to perform reliable and repeatable measurements of clinical parameters. This satellite symposium will address several aspects of exam-iner calibration, including measurement of plaque, gingivitis, pocket depth, attachment level, bone loss, surface deposits, and staining. Presentations will focus on the principles of calibration, scoring based on a gingivitis index, scoring based on a plaque index, assessment of deposits and staining based on disclosing and non-disclosing conditions, calibration procedures for pocket depth and attachment level, clinical examples used for calibration, quality control in clinical studies, statistical aspects of calibration including concepts of accuracy and precision, tips and tricks for conducting a calibration study, and reporting calibration in publications.
