Community-based Participatory Research: An Essential Approach for Reducing Oral Health Disparities
* Poster files available online

Sponsored by: NIDCR
Description: Recently, an Institute of Medicine Report and federal government activities have underscored the importance of community-based participatory research to eliminating health disparities. Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is an approach that equitably and respectfully draws on the expertise of community and academic partners in all aspects of the research process, from planning to interpretation of results and policy recommendations. This collaboration is designed to enhance the quality of the research, knowledge gained, and likelihood of implementation of successful interventions to improve the health and well-being of community members. Through its RFAs, the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research has encouraged oral health researchers to involve a broad array of community collaborations to reduce or eliminate oral health disparities. The purpose of this Symposium is to provide investigators with an understanding of essential constructs and concepts of community-based participatory research with a view towards facilitating active involvement of communities in establishing research agendas and expected outcomes. In addition factors critical to the development of sound research projects/proposals using CBPR will be discussed. Presenters will include recognized leaders in the area of community-based participatory research, including those of several Centers for Research to Reduce Oral Health Disparities, who have pragmatic experience in planning and conducting this important type of research designed to improve oral health status and eliminate health disparities
