| Description: Biomedical informatics is an increasingly important discipline for today’s dental and craniofacial scientists. While informatics has been applied both formally and informally in many research projects, its closer integration with dental research is impeded by two factors. Most dental researchers are not aware of what informatics is, how it can help them in their research, and how it differs from information technology. Second, there is no strategy for promoting the integration of informatics with dental research. This symposium has two goals. First, it will provide an overview of biomedical informatics, and discuss its current and potential links to dental research. Second, it will stimulate discussion and feedback from the audience about which current research problems could be made more tractable by applying informatics, and how the connection of informatics and research could be strengthened. “Biomedical Informatics: An Overview” by Dr. Titus Schleyer will provide a definition of biomedical informatics, introduce its research areas, and discuss informatics methods and tools relevant to dental research. The presentation “A Quantitative Content Analysis of Dental Research” by Dr. Bill Bartling will present the results of a datamining study of the dental research literature in MEDLINE. This content analysis of dental research papers provides a high-level view of research activities in various fields. The presentation will discuss informatics methods and tools related to those research activites. The remaining time in the symposium will be dedicated to an open discussion of dental research and informatics issues. Participants will be asked to submit short, written comments and/or questions during the symposium. We expect that this symposium will generate valuable questions and comments that will be discussed more fully at the NIDCR/NLM-sponsored conference “Dental Informatics and Dental Research: Making the Connection” (see www.dentalinformatics.com) on June 12 and 13 in Bethesda | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
