| Description: Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQOL) assessment is deemed important in health services research as it provides useful descriptive information regarding the health status of children, a tool for evaluating health disparities,as well as an outcome measure to detect changes in health status associated with treatment. Yet developing measures to assess children across health systems, diagnostic groups, racial/ethnic groups, and age ranges presents unique challenges. This symposium will present theoretical and methodological issues in assessing OHRQOL in children. Specific topics to be presented include: constructing questionnaires, such as item content, response formats, and time reference periods when assessing children across varying developmental stages; comparing child and parental ratings as well as the advantages and limitations of parental versus children’s assessments; evaluating health constructs in children with cognitive and emotional disabilities and developing positive items and incorporating positive health dimensions. Lastly a discussant will summarize the major challenges and future directions in assessing and utilizing OHRQOL measures in research and clinical applications. Currently each of the presenters is engaged in research measuring children’s oral health-related quality of life. Sponsored by NIDCR: R21 DE1373221 & R01 DE1373 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
