| Description: The objective of this symposium is to update current knowledge of the interface between the restoration and the tooth. This joint symposium between the Dental Materials Group of the AADR and the Biomaterials Section of the ADEA will allow this interaction. Presentations will address the following issues: concerning the reaction of the tooth interface involving hydroxyapatite during the bonding procedure: the consequence of using various self-etching priming/bonding systems on the tooth: and permeability studies of the adhesive layers and hybrid zone. Current concepts and knowledge of this information aid the educator in developing models to educate the undergraduate and graduate students. At a time when there is such an influx of new research and the development of new materials and techniques, the educator must keep up with current research. This joint symposium offers the educator a chance to listen to new research and ask questions. This program will serve as an interface uniting research and education. The program will commence with three presentations, each just under 30 minutes. Dr. Mathilde Peters, Counsilor for the Biomaterials Section, will give some opening remarks and introduce the speakers. This will be followed by a panel discussion with the three presenters answering questions from the audience. The first topic will be presented by Dr. Soderholm who will discuss recent studies involving the oral cavity/tooth interface, hydroxyapatite and what occurs when hydroxyapatite is etched. The second speaker, Dr. Pashley, will present the topic "Hybrid layers are permeability membranes." Dr. Tay will give the third presentation. His topic will be “Compatibility/incompatibility of chemical-cured composites with self-etching adhesives." At the conclusion of the third presentation there will be a question-answer-discussion session for the remainder of the allotted time | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
