| Description: The 21st century dental clinician is faced with ever more complex diagnostic and treatment modalities. Appropriate decision making is critical to the delivery of high quality dental care. The objective of this case-based seminar is to demonstrate how a thorough understanding of the basic sciences is necessary for the optimal diagnosis and treatment of patients. Classic "cook book" dental decision making may lead to a poor or incorrect treatment choice. Further, weak understanding and failure to integrate the basic science foundational knowledge into clinically applicable information may prevent a clinician from being capable of ever selecting the best dental care. Through the presentation of different dental cases, presenters will demonstrate the need for thorough basic science education to make the correct diagnosis and treatment selection. Three cases will be presented (30 minutes each plus a 10 minute question and answer period) to demonstrate how a good basic science education leads to better diagnosis and treatment of a patient. Cases will be specifically selected to show how the wrong diagnostic decision may be made if the clinician does not understand how to interpret all the signs and symptoms. Dental and medical science has the ability to provide a vast amount of diagnostic data that may alter the outcome of their dental care. Unfortunately, many clinicians lack the background to interpret this data, especially an understanding of Oral Biology and the Basic Science disciplines of immunology, biochemistry, microbiology, physiology, anatomy, pharmacology etc.upon which it rests. Case I: A patient with Oral Malodor -presenter Dr. Israel Kleinberg Case II: A patient with Periodontal Disease -presenter Dr. Maria Ryan Case III: A patient with Dental Caries -presenter Dr. Mark Wolff | ||||||||||||||||||||
