| Description: The way we grow organisms in the laboratory has very little to do with the way organisms grow in human systems. In most natural environments biofilms are the prevailing microbial lifestyle. A biofilm is defined as a structured microbial community consisting of a matrix enclosed population of cells adherent to surfaces, interfaces, and/or each other. Most advances in the field of biofilm research have resulted from the investigation of bacterial biofilms, however Candida biofilms are quite common, especially in the oral cavity. Very little is known about how this fungus selects, colonizes, and grows on oral surfaces to form biofilms. This symposium will focus on the current understanding of the role of biofilms in oral candidal disease. This symposium is aimed at a broad range of investigators from those studying basic mechanisms of Candida pathogenesis to those involved in new treatment strategies for this common infection. The goal of this symposium is to stimulate discussion to promote the evaluation of oral biofilms to include Candida as well as bacteria. Topics covered in the symposium will include: a description of the general characteristics of the development of oral Candida biofilms, the role of Candida biofilm formation in denture stomatitis, and antifungal drug resistance in Candida biofilms | ||||||||||||||||||||
