Description: In the United States 30,000 new cases of oral and pharyngeal cancers are diagnosed each year and close to 8,000 deaths occur. The five-year relative survival rate is low and it has remained relatively unchanged for the past 30 years. Presently, only 35% of oral cancers are detected at an early stage when morbidity and mortality could be reduced. To address this issue, the Healthy People 2010 includes three objectives on oral and pharyngeal cancers. Based on Maryland's statewide approach to attain these objectives, the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research funded five states to conduct the planning for a statewide program regarding oral cancer pevention and early detection. In this session presenters from those states will describe and provide data on: 1) the epidemiological needs assessment, 2) the assessment of the public's and health care providers' knowledge, opinions and practices regarding oral cancer, and 3) the state's approach for developing the infrastructure for a state oral cancer prevention and early detection program
