| 0812 The Effect of Silica-filled Resin on Properties of Resin-infused Alumina | ||

GIORDANO, Boston University, MA, USA Objectives: The aim of this study is to determine the effect using a partially filled resin on the mechanical properties of an interpenetrating phase composite. Methods: The study consists of two parts. First, silica dispersed in resin is examined. Second, the properties of interpenetrating phase composite are investigated. Two different sizes of silica, 0.007 um and 0.011 um, were tested to determine the effect of silica concentration and particle size on selected properties. Both were prepared by incorporating filler into a heat-curable 1:1 by mole UDMA/TEGDMA at a filler level of 5%, 3% and 1% by weight. Cured resin was cut into bars and tested in three-point bending. In-Ceram alumina was used as the porous matrix and infused with six different groups of resin. Biaxial strength and fracture toughness(SENB) tests were performed. Results: The mean strength of the silica reinforced resin bars ranged from 113 MPa to 189 MPa for particle size of 0.007 um and from 114 MPa to 154 MPa for particle size of 0.011 um. Biaxial strength and fracture toughness value for the 0.011 um powder series increased as the weight percent of added silica increased.The strength increased from 224 MPa at 1% to 258 MPa at 3% and to 261 MPa at 5% by weight. However, ANOVA revealed that there was no statistically significant difference between the testing groups and the control group of resin infused without silica (207 MPa). For 0.007 um silica powder, the strength increased for 1% (275 MPa)and 3% by weight(301 MPa),and then decreased when the silica powder was increased to 5% by weight(214 MPa). There was a significant difference among these groups. Conclusions: Silica filler had a significant effect on the properties of the interpenetrating phase materials. | ||
