| The Impact of Policies on Tobacco Use: An International Perspective |
| * Poster files available online |
Sponsored by: Behavioral Sciences, ad hoc Committee on Tobacco |
| Description: Univerally, tobacco use is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Tobacco attributable mortality and morbidity will likely increase globally in this century if additional policies are not developed, implemented, and monitored. To date, combined uses of policies to deter tobacco use has had the greatest impact in decreasing its use. The purpose of this symposium is to describe and discuss the impact of tobacco policies on tobacco prevention and cessation. Research supporting the policies on access, pricing, labeling, and smoking restrictions in public areas internationally will be presented. Moreover, research still needed will be presented and discussed. This session is aimed at investigators at all levels; in fact, we hope to entice investigators new to the field to become interested in tobacco research at all levels including policy research. We plan to update participants on policy research and tobacco use prevention policies that have worked around the world. By providing information on Canada's Graphic labeling of tobacco products and the supporting research may stimulate investigators in other countries to conduct similar research which can be used to make policies for their respective country. All speakers for this session are well known for their knowledge and research in their fields. Thus, a global perspective will be provided as well as those from the US, India, and other developing countries and Canada. Concommitantly, policies that have worked in certain countries that have underlying research will be shared. This symposium is supported by the NIDA, NIDCR, NIH, and Dept of Health and Human Resources |
