| Malocclusion and Masticatory Function – What is the Connection? |
| * Poster files available online |
Sponsored by: Craniofacial Biology, Neuroscience / TMJ, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Prosthodontics Research |
| Description: It is often tacitly assumed that malocclusions are associated with abnormal masticatory function and that the correction of malocclusion improves function. Recent methodological and computational developments have made it possible to systematically and objectively evaluate and validate some of the proposed associations. This symposium will synthesize the existing literature and present recent findings to determine if and how malocclusions are related with masticatory function. It is intended to provide a more in-depth understanding of this important relationship for both clinicians and scientists involved in dental research. It is hoped that the symposium will stimulate discussions concerning to potential clinical applications of the proposed relationships. It is also expected that the symposium will stimulate discussion pertaining to methodological improvements, collaborative efforts, and future research directions. The symposium’s theme will be set by initially emphasizing the clinical implications of masticatory function. This will be followed by reviews of how muscle function and bite forces are related to malocclusion and craniofacial morphology. To better understand the potential kinematic differences in masticatory function, the chewing patterns of individuals with malocclusion will be reviewed and discussed. The symposium will conclude with a discussion of how occlusion and malocclusion affect individuals’ abilities to break down foods |
