| Description: Despite many recent advances in surgical, radiological, and
chemotherapeutic modalities, many cancer patients continue to suffer from
treatment side effects and disabilities caused by their advancing tumors.
Indeed, once the cancer spreads extensively, little can be done to reverse
the process in the majority of the cases. Therefore, not only the quality
of life is poor for many cancer patients with advanced disease, these
patients often die from the spread of cancer to many of their vital organs.
The symposium will address the state of the art knowledge in tumor
immunology as they relate to both clinical and basic science findings. The
role of tumor apoptosis in the trigger of immunity against cancer will also be discussed. Although tumor immunity against oral tumors is the focus of this symposium the experiences and recent advances in the Melanoma and Lung Cancer Immunotherapies will also be presented. This symposium will have a strong translational component. Strategies for tumor vaccine development and therapy for the Oral tumors will be presented. It is expected that this symposium will provide a forum for clinicians and cancer researchers at all levels and understandings to exchange ideas for establishing successful cancer immunotheraputics. Experiences from Melanoma and Lung cancer immunotherapies will be discussed and their possible application to the oral tumors will be the focus of discussion. The symposium will also address recent advances in the immunobiology of Natural Killer and Cytotoxic T cells in general as they relate to all tumors and in particular as they relate to the tumors of the oral cavity. Both the cellular and molecular aspects of tumor Immunotherapy will be discussed.
The symposium is supported by the Weintraub Center for Biotechnology |
