Current Perspectives on Trigeminal Mechanisms Supporting Pain of Pulpal Origin
* Poster files available online

Sponsored by: Neuroscience / TMJ, Pulp Biology
Description: Dental pain is one of the most common acute pain conditions. However, the neural mechanisms underlying dental pain are poorly understood. Recent studies, which have used a variety of immunohistochemical, neurochemical, electrophysiological and behavioral methodologies, have identified a number of peripheral and central processes that are likely to contribute to pain associated with injury to the dentition. Dr. Matti Narhi (Speaker 1- confirmed) will present findings on the peripheral afferent and vascular responses to substances that evoke pulpal inflammation. Dr. Hargreaves (Speaker 2 - confirmed) will discuss the neurochemical processes that contribute to pulpal inflammation and pain. Dr. William Maixner (Speaker 3 - confirmed) will present the outcomes of recent studies that have examined the contribution of different regions of the spinal trigeminal nucleus (Vsp) in the processing of nociceptive information from the dentition. He will also present data suggesting that the endogenous opioid peptide dynorphin plays an important role in modulating nociceptive responses to tooth-pulp stimulation. Dr. Barry Sessle (Speaker 4 - to be confirmed) will present recent electrophysiological and pharmacological data on the underlying neural mechanisms and neurchemical processes that contribute to changes in the excitability of central nociceptive neurons following pulpal inflammation. The symposium will conclude with a round table discussion with the audience
