| Description: In developed countries, the reduction of dental caries in childhood has led to the development and recognition of high caries risk communities who have failed to benefit from prevention and are often excluded from regular use of health care. The communities are in neighbourhoods of low socio-economic status, minority ethnic groups are over represented and general health and living conditions are poor. In developing countries, as development increases so does caries. Internationally, there is a growing emphasis on identifying high risk groups, to commence prevention from a young age, a high-risk approach. However, others argue that caries is a mass disease and the affected minority are the extreme of a continuous distribution of risk and, therefore effective prevention requires a population approach. With the recognition of behavioural, cultural and biological impacts on health, it is evident that a single approach to prevention is unlikely to be effective. This symposium aims to initiate debate by bringing together experts in the field from a range of disciplines. The session begins with an exposition of the concept of risk and how that should impact on developing an evidence-based approach to prevention. An appreciation of the complexity of the microflora in people with caries is challenging the orthodoxy that a single genus can be targeted for intervention. The next presentation considers what methodologies are available to clinicians to enhance caries risk assessment. Finally, an appreciation of socio-behavioural risk factors is essential and there are considerable variations on how these are expressed in different countries and cultures.
The symposium is aimed at pre- and post-doctoral researchers to encourage interchange between clinicians, basic scientists, public health dentists and those evaluating interventions for prevention. The papers and a précis of the discussion are to be published in an international dental journal |
