Vital Tooth Whitening - An Update on Safety and Efficacy

Description: Vital tooth whitening is a significant part of contemporary dental practice, having gained acceptance as a less invasive means of addressing patient’s esthetic concerns than more traditional crowns or veneers. Available techniques include patient-applied tray and strip delivery systems as well as in-office procedures that may use combinations of heat and light to activate the whitener. Available materials include carbamide peroxide (5-35%) and hydrogen peroxide (5-35%). Of concern to dentists and also regulatory authorities are the efficacy and safety of these procedures. This symposium will review the scientific data as to the efficacy and safety of the available systems and examine the risk / benefit ratio and cost / benefit ratio of the different systems. Also to be explored are the proper techniques for clinical research and how access to tooth whitening has been limited in some countries because of regulatory issues.
