| Description: The symposium will address the factors influencing changes in oral mucosa and jawbone supporting dental prostheses in frail elders. We will focus initially on the methods and results of studies addressing the distribution and genetics of disorders in the oral mucosa and jawbones in this population. Subsequently, we will address the cellular responses in the mucosa and bone to normal oral function and to the pressures induced by dental prostheses. The symposium is aimed at new investigators and clinical researchers who seek information on the extent of the molecular changes induced in the oral mucosa and jawbone by normal and abnormal functional pressures, and on the research methods available to explore these changes. We hope to stimulate discussion on the need for further study of these problems by explaining the benefits of interdisciplinary basic and clinical research.
