The Shortened Dental Arch (SDA) Concept in Elderly Persons
* Poster files available online

Sponsored by: Geriatric Oral Research, Nutrition, Prosthodontics Research
Description: The shortened dental arch (SDA) concept was developed more than 20 years ago in order to avoid prosthetic overtreatment and to consider limited treatment goals. It is the purpose of this symposium to outline the shortened dental arch concept and to overview studies on the relationship between tooth loss and masticatory ability, masticatory performance and temporomandibular disorders. Malnutrition or undernutrition in the elderly is an independent risk factor for morbidity and mortality with the typical causes being chewing or swallowing disorders, cardiac insufficiency, depression, social deprivation and loneliness. This symposium will question to which extent the SDA concept can be applied in healthy as well as frail and dependent elderly considering appropriate masticatory function and nutritional status. Finally, the benefit of therapeutic options for replacement of posterior tooth loss will be evaluated regarding the preservation of oral health, oral health related quality of life and patients' satisfaction with respect to chewing ability and aesthetics. This symposium will highlight the scientific support and clinical concepts for replacement of posterior loss in the elderly. The symposium is supported by the Procter & Gamble Company
