Objectives: 1) to examine seral IL-1b concentration in patients with periodontitis; 2) to evaluate the influence of initial periodontal treatment phase on IL-1b concentration in serum Methods: 45 patients not previously treated, with diagnosis of severe chronic periodontitis, were included in the study. Control group consisted of 25 healthy persons, with healthy periodontium. In both groups periodontal examination was provided, then seral concentrations of IL-1b were measured. Inital treatment phase was applied (incl. patient's motiviation, scaling, oral hygiene instructions)and 3 months after the examination was repeated. For the evaluation of IL-1b concentration in serum ELISA technique was used with monoclonal antibodies supplied in standard sets. Statistical analysis included usage of SPSS computer package (modified t-Student tests with prior variance evaluation with Levene's test) Results: There is statistically significant increase of IL-1b concentration in serum of study group compared to control group(8,97 pg/ml vs 1,56 pg/ml respectively). There is also a decrease of IL-1b concentration in study group after finished initial treatment phase (3 months after first examination), but not significant (8,97 pg/ml vs 3,11 pg/ml, respectively) Conclusions: Although statistically significant, changes of IL-1b concentrations in serum do not seem to influence the systemic condition of generally healthy individuals. Nevertheless, elimination of bacterial factor decreases concentation of key inflammatory cytokine, detectable in the blood of otherwise healthy persons suffering from periodontitis.
