SASAKI, Tokyo Medical & Dental University, Japan OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the accuracy of the wall thickness of the maxillary sinus in multiplanar reformatted CT image (cross-sectional dental CT image). METHODS: Phantom was scanned using a helical-typed CT machine and cross-sectional dental CT images were reconstructed. The phantom was made of acrylic resin, which was double cylinder typed (20 cm outer diameter, 5cm inner diameter and 15cm height) and the outer space was filled with water. 3 triangle poles made of aluminum plates (thickness of 0.21, 0.41, 0.81mm) were to mimic the maxillary sinus and placed on the inner cylinder. 1) The aluminum triangle pole filled with or without meat were scanned with 120kV, 1mm slice-thickness varying tube current and pitch. 2) The aluminum triangle pole with acrylic plates (0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.4mm) mimicking a soft tissue attached to the inner surface was scanned. Three observers measured aluminum plate thickness (parallel, 45 degree, perpendicular to the rotation axis of the scanning) and evaluated the discrimination of acrylic plate with aluminum plate on the image. RESULTS: 1) For the aluminum plate thickness of 0.2, 0.4, 0.8mm, the measured minimum thickness of the aluminum plate with the soft tissue were 1.4, 1.6 and 1.7mm and without the soft tissue were 1.2, 1.2 and 1.3mm, respectively. When the direction of the aluminum plate was 45-degree, the measured thickness was thicker than that with other directions (p<0.05). 2) For the aluminum plate thickness of 0.2mmm, aluminum plate couldn't be discriminated with acrylic resin plates. For 0.8mm and for the direction parallel or 45-degree, acrylic resin plate of more than 1.0mm could be discriminated. CONCLUSIONS: The measured wall thickness of the maxillary sinus is always thicker than the real thickness on the cross-sectional CT image. Special attention should be taken for this variation in the image diagnosis for dental implantology. | ||
