K. MALKIEWICZ, and E. JODKOWSKA, Warsaw Medical University, Warszawa, Poland Objectives: The main purpose of this clinical trial was to determine the tooth whitening effect of the VivaStyle - bleaching system by IvoclarVivadent based on 10% carbamide peroxide. A secondary aim was to assess the usefulness of the Shadeanalyzer in clinical dental practice. Methods: A total of 20 adults was examined. They used the 10% VivaStyle gel in trays for 2 hours per day over 14 days. The change of L*a*b* colour parameters was assessed by use of a digital camera – Shadeanalyzer, designed for evaluating tooth colour. A series of pictures of the central incisors was taken for each patient. The first picture was taken before bleaching, the second after seven days and the third after 14 days of treatment. Pictures were analyzed by the use of Shadeanalyzer software to reveal the L*a*b* values in relation to the Vita shade guide. Each image was analyzed twice, and the mean L*a*b* value taken for statistical analysis. Results: An analysis of the data revealed a significant change in the colour of bleached teeth. The results show an improvement of 1-2 shades on the shade guide (Vita). The mean value of L* (lightness) increased from 83.13 to 85.07 after 7 days and to 86.02 after 14 days. The mean value of b* (yellowness) decreased from 5.46 to 4.54 after 7 days and to 4.34 after 14 days. It was consistently found that both of the two values obtained by Shadeanalyzer evaluation were within the same shade on the Vita Scale. Conclusion: The findings suggest that the VivaStyle bleaching system can be considered as an effective method of teeth bleaching. The study confirms the potential usefulness of Shadeanalyzer in the assessment of tooth colour change. | ||
